The effects of Global Warming

An interesting note to point out to you . . .

There was an article written on ALTERNET about the environment which headlines read . . .

ENVIRONMENT

Winter Olympics Threatened by Global Warming, but NBC Won't Acknowledge It

Winter sports are taking a huge hit from climate change. Why is NBC mum on the subject?

In the article, it was brought out that the NBC Network, which calls itself "the proud home for all U.S. coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang," has failed to address the fact that increased temperatures due to climate change are threatening the future of outdoor winter sports.

The Morning Brew®

Pre-Launch LOOK continued...
Good Morning Brewers
or
Good Evening Brewers

[It will be morning or evening depending upon where you are on the globe, and depending upon what time you decide to check out our edition of The Morning Brew®]

As we continue to update you during our Pre-Launch LOOK,  we'd like you to know the latest with regard to the California wildfires that we reported on in our last issue.  We are still keeping our prayers going for the firefighters, as well as those in California and those who have family in California who are affected by the ongoing wildfires . . .

California wildfires December 2017

The California fires have destroyed 1,000 structures ... and counting.  One week after the Thomas fire exploded from a brush fire to a raging inferno, hundreds of firefighters are still struggling to contain it.

To give you a prospective of the scope of the size of the fires ~ the blaze is larger than all of New York City and was only 15% contained as of Monday (Dec 10th), according to the fire protection agency CAL FIRE.

The Thomas fire is only one of six major wildfires torching the state of California.  As the flames move onward to new neighborhoods, some evacuated residents have returned sadly to find no home standing.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The fires are making history, at more than 230,000 acres in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, the Thomas Fire is now the fifth largest wildfire in modern California history.

Fire conditions are much better than over the weekend, but winds will continue to be a bit breezy at 20 to 40 mph through the middle of the week, according to the CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

The National Weather Service has stated that there is a "red flag warning" for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties that has been extended through Monday evening.  That means that there are elevated fire weather conditions expected due to gusty winds and low humidity.

EVACUATIONS

According to CNN, some 94,607 people were under mandatory evacuation orders in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties on Sunday evening.  [Information obtained from Ventura County Sheriff Captain Garo Kuredjian]

THE SIX BLAZES

The six blazes vary in size.  Together, they are larger than the areas of New York City and Boston combined to give you a sense of size.

THOMAS FIRE ~ (Has already destroyed more than 790 structures, and the costs of fighting the blaze have topped 34 million.)

CREEK FIRE ~ (The second largest blaze  ignited on Tuesday in neighboring Los Angeles County, and has burned approximately 15, 619 acres and is 95% contained.)

RYE FIRE ~ (This fire also broke out on Tuesday in Los Angeles County and has torched approximately 6,049 acres.  Firefighters are making progress with 93% of the blaze contained.)

LILAC FIRE ~ (This fast-moving fire has consumed approximately 4,100 acres since it ignited Thursday in San Diego County.  Firefighters have regained control of this blaze, and it is now 80% contained.)

SKIRBALL FIRE ~ (This fire started on Wednesday as a brush fire in Los Angeles County, north of Brentwood.  The Skirball Fire has destroyed 422 acres and is 85% contained.)

LIBERTY FIRE ~ (This blaze in Riverside County has burned 300 acres since it ignited Thursday.  It is 100% contained, but authorities are monitoring the fire because of a forecasted increase in winds.)

NOTE:  Celebrities have thanked Firefighters

Several celebrities with homes in the endangered region thanked firefighters for their brave efforts.

Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, who both have houses in Montecito (an affluent Santa Barbara suburb) tweeted that they were praying for their communities.

Person of the Year

THE SILENCE BREAKERS

THE VOICES THAT LAUNCHED A MOVEMENT

Time chooses #MeToo movement as person of the year (By Erik Ortez - U.S. NEWS).  "The Silence Breakers" of the #MeToo movement, who gave a voice to sexual assault and harassment survivors and showed them that they are not alone, are Time's 2017 Person of the Year, the magazine revealed exclusively Wednesday (December 6, 2017) on "Today".

While the concept of #MeToo was started in 2006 by Activist Tarana Burke, its use became part of the national conversation in October 2017 after celebrities on social media used it to share their own sexual abuse stories in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.  The wave of stories prompted people from all walks of life to add their voice to the movement.

California Wildfires
December 2017
Once again ~ burning!

LOS ANGELES — Southern California is fighting a renewed onslaught from the wildfires menacing greater Los Angeles, with emergency crews contending with brisk winds, steep terrain and fatigue from days of relentless work.

Currently, Southern California officials are warning of unprecedented dangerous winds on Thursday (December 7th, 2017), with gusts possibly reaching 80 mph.  The region is dealing with several massive wildfires that have around 200,000 under evacuation orders.

The four largest fires have scorched a combined 116,000 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties as of Thursday morning (December 7th, 2017), and none of those fires was close to being contained.

Our prayers are going out to all living in the State of California dealing with the destructive wildfires, the firefighters, and those who have family in the danger zones.
